Astigmatism and LASIK – King LASIK

One of the most common visual disorders for which laser eye surgery is an option is astigmatism. If you or someone you know suffers from this condition, the information provided on this page could help you learn more about this disorder and how King LASIK surgeons can eliminate or reduce the visual abnormalities it causes through laser eye surgery.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a common vision disorder that can occur by itself or with myopia hyperopia.

SYMPTOMS

Astigmatism causes blurred or distorted vision at both near and distant ranges. Headaches and eyestrain may also accompany this condition.

CAUSES

Whereas the curvature of a normal cornea resembles that of the surface of a baseball, the curvature of an astigmatic cornea is oblong, much like the surface of a football. The cornea of an astigmatic eye therefore usually has two curves – one that is steep and one that is flat. This causes light entering the eye to converge at multiple points rather than at a single location, as with a regular cornea. The eye consequently transmits conflicting signals to the brain, which creates blurred or distorted vision.
Individuals usually inherit astigmatism from their parents; however, it can also be caused by injury or ocular disease.

TREATMENT

Visual distortion caused by astigmatism can be treated with glasses or special contact lenses. The condition can also be effectively corrected through laser eye surgery such as LASIK or PRK.

LASIK Surgery For Astigmatism

Every year, the King LASIK team provides enhanced vision to thousands of individuals suffering from astigmatism. Each LASIK surgeon at our practice possesses the expertise and commitment required to deliver exceptional laser vision correction. The way in which our surgeons correct astigmatism through LASIK is by flattening the steeper curve of the cornea. This helps to decrease the cornea’s oblong shape and creates a more spherical form. In the procedure, laser pulses are precisely delivered to corneal tissue in the axis of the steeper curve. By decreasing the angle of the sharper curve and contributing to the overall spherical shape of the cornea, LASIK surgery enables the eye to focus light rays more efficiently, resulting in clearer, crisper vision.

One of the many benefits of laser eye surgery is that it is the only treatment available for astigmatism that actually addresses the source of the problem rather than simply treating the symptoms.
